Black Hills Off-Season Campgrounds

Hosted by USDA Forest Service

New listing

Black Hills Off-Season Campgrounds is a U.S. Forest Service listing covering a group of campgrounds in the Black Hills National Forest, near Hill City, South Dakota. Between them it counts sixteen standard sites and one tent-only site, all non-electric. The photographs are drawn from several of those campgrounds. Comanche Park, Bismark Lake and Redbank Springs all show open ponderosa pine forest with grass growing between widely spaced trunks, gravel spur roads running past numbered wooden site posts, and pads holding a wooden picnic table and a steel fire ring, some edged with low walls of rough stone. Another site sits on packed dirt and pine needles under tall trunks, its picnic table and separate bench beside a fire grate set on a concrete pad. One photo looks down a gravel forest road to the carved entrance sign for Rod and Gun Campground, with wooded canyon walls and a band of pale rock rising behind it. Another shows a still lake reflecting the pine ridges that enclose it, its shallow margins thick with reeds and grass. In a third, a dome tent stands on grass under the pines with a fire burning in a metal ring and vehicles parked among the trees beyond.
