Byers Peak Wilderness

Byers Peak Wilderness is home to extensive alpine tundra, with about half of the land above tree line. The Byers Peak Trail traverses the area from north to south, running from Bottle Pass to Saint Louis Peak, rising above the shadows of Engelmann spruce, subalpine fir, and lodgepole pine that cover the lower elevations. Although small, it is connected to the larger roadless region of Colorado by the undeveloped head of the Fraser Experimental Forest, which separates it from Vasquez Peak Wilderness. Despite its size, Byers Peak features several scenic lakes and 23 miles of trails offering panoramic views along some of the state's finest ridge hikes. The peak itself, reached by the Byers Peak Trail, offers rewarding views after an 8.6-mile round trip from the trailhead. Visitors may encounter mule deer, elk, ptarmigan, and marmots, but the main attraction is the tranquility offered by one of the Rocky Mountains' most obscure wilderness areas.
