New listing

Charlton Campground is located 17 miles west of Hot Springs National Park along Highway 270 West. Constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, this historic campground has been upgraded with modern amenities. It is known as one of the coldest swimming sites in the state of Arkansas, and the cool water temperatures can be enjoyed throughout the summer months. Located in the valley between two tree covered mountains, the campsites are well shaded. Walnut Creek, a natural spring-fed stream, runs through the campground and keeps temperatures cool even through the summer; access is available for wading and fishing in the creek. Campsites range from basic to more developed. A-Loop sites are basic, each with a fire ring, BBQ grill and picnic table, with community water spigots throughout the loop but no electric or water at the sites and no bathhouse or restroom facility. B-Loop RV/tent campsites offer 30-50 amp electrical service and water connections. C-Loop sites 1-10 offer 30-amp electrical service, water connections, and sewer connections at some sites; C-Loop sites 11-19 have no electric or water. Neither group use site has electric or water, and tents are only allowed at the group use sites. Warm water showers and flush toilets are provided, along with paved roadways and campsites with gravel tent pads, and there is a dump station at the campground. The Charlton Day Use Area offers swimming and picnicking facilities, a large pavilion, and an amphitheater for group gatherings. Two trail systems lead out from the day use area — a 1 mile interpretative trail and a connector trail to the Lake Ouachita Vista Trail (LOViT) — and further hiking trails are located in and around the campground. Nearby attractions include Lake Ouachita and the Lake Ouachita Vista Trail at Hickory Nut Mountain, Hot Springs National Park, historic Hot Springs, and quartz crystal mines.
