James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge

James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge is located in Kahuku, Koʻolauloa, on the island of Oʻahu. It is one of the few scattered remnants of natural wetlands that still exist on Oʻahu. The refuge was established in 1976 for the purpose of providing habitat for endangered Hawaiian waterbirds. Further expansion was authorized in 2005 to provide additional habitat for endangered waterbirds, migratory shorebirds, waterfowl, seabirds, endangered and native plant species, the endangered ʻīlioholo-i-ka-uaua (Hawaiian monk seal), and the threatened honu (Hawaiian green sea turtle); to increase wildlife-dependent public uses; and to assist with flood damage reduction in the local area.
