Lizard Creek Campground

Lizard Creek Campground is located in the northern portion of Grand Teton National Park and provides a convenient basecamp for campers taking day trips to both Grand Teton and Yellowstone. This 60-site campground sits on the northern shore of Jackson Lake and offers access to the lake waters and views of the northern Teton Range. The area is frequented by park wildlife large and small, as well as a variety of bird species. This is normally one of the last campgrounds to open and the first to close for the season, and it can often see quickly changing weather — the perfect location for visitors looking to avoid the crowds who don't need more than the basic amenities. Hiking is one of the parks' most popular activities. While no trails leave directly from the campground proper, several can be found at Colter Bay, 7 miles south, and in Yellowstone, 8 miles north. Another popular activity is recreating on Jackson Lake, a large alpine lake stretching nearly 7 miles wide and 15 miles long with a maximum depth of over 400 feet; water temperatures generally vary from 50 to 70 degrees during the campground's season. The campground provides convenient access for trout fishing and canoe/kayak use, and many campers can be found cooling off on the shores. Lizard Creek does not have a boat ramp — ramp access, rentals, guided fishing trips on Jackson Lake and scenic float trips on the Snake River are available at Signal Mountain Lodge and its marina. Photography and sightseeing are other popular focuses. The location provides a unique perspective of the lake and mountains for sunrise and sunset photographs, with numerous opportunities for landscape and nightscape work, often with the bonus of wildlife shots. This is a great spot to spend your rest day away from the crowds. The campground offers tent camping and pull-in/back-in sites for RVs or trailers up to 25 feet. Nearly half of the sites are walk-in tent sites, which provide a more private and dispersed experience than other campgrounds in the park. Three comfort stations provide flush toilets and camper sinks, and potable water is dispersed regularly throughout the campground. All sites have picnic tables, fire rings and bear-proof food storage boxes. Parking pads, tent areas and the distance from parking to campsite vary greatly in size, so use the site photographs and dimensions to ensure a proper fit for your vehicle and party. Trash collection and recycling receptacles are provided, and ice and firewood can be purchased at the campground office. The campground sits slightly elevated from Jackson Lake on Fonda Point, surrounded by a predominantly lodgepole pine and spruce forest, with sweeping views of the northern Teton Range looking south from the lakeshore. Red fox, coyotes, bears and mule deer frequent the area, and bald eagles and osprey are often perched among the lakeshore trees as they search the water. To protect wildlife and fellow campers, proper food storage is enforced and regularly monitored. The South Entrance of Yellowstone is 11 miles north; Leek's Pizzeria is 7 miles south with indoor and outdoor dining; Colter Bay, 8 miles south, has an expanded grocery store, public showers and a laundromat; and the town of Jackson is 55 miles south. Not having larger facilities nearby makes for a quieter, slower-paced atmosphere than other locations in the park.
