Lost Lake Cabins

Eleven cabins for rent in a remote forested area on the shores of Lost Lake. They sit in a group setting and make an excellent base for individuals, families, family reunions or any large group — the entire facility can sleep up to 60. Cabins 1 through 8 are located adjacent to and along the shore of the lake, while the First Aid Cabin, Staff Cabin #1 and Staff Cabin #2 are a bit further away from the water. Cabins are available mid-May through mid-October. The Lost Lake Campground across the lake offers friends and family the chance to tent or RV camp and still be within a short 1/4 mile walk to the cabins. The 92-acre lake gets its name from the lack of any apparent inflow or outlet — it is fed by springs — and no motors are permitted, though there is a boat access area at the campground. It is stocked yearly with brown and rainbow trout and also holds perch, smallmouth bass and panfish. A small beach sits at the cabins, and a larger, more appealing swimming beach is available at the campground. The Lost Lake Trail, a 1-mile interpretive trail through a stand of 150-year-old hemlock and pine, is a short walk away, with connections to the Ridge and Assessors trails; the Lauterman National Recreation Trail system is just over a mile off. Swimming, non-motorized boating, fishing, hiking, bird watching, mushrooming and hunting all start here. Cabins 1 through 8 and Staff Cabin #2 are simple one-room wood frame structures with three bunk beds, sleeping up to six. All cabins have electricity, lights and outlets — use your imagination and bring a fan, space heater, electric blanket, crockpot, coffee maker. Please bring your own bedding and pillows, as these are not provided. It is glorified camping! Staff Cabin #1 comfortably sleeps 2 and is furnished with a dining table and chairs and a love seat, a full kitchen with stove, a full bathroom with shower, and baseboard heat for cold evenings. The First Aid Cabin sleeps 4 and has a kitchenette (no stove), a half bath (no shower) and baseboard heat. Bathrooms and showers are provided in two central buildings, one for men and one for women. Drinking water comes from a faucet at the back of the well house, and there is an artesian well one mile away at the Chipmunk Rapids campground. A central recreation hall is open to anyone at any time for group gatherings. The kitchen, refurbished in 2012, can accommodate weddings, retreats and family reunions and is equipped with a gas range stove and oven, a big freezer/refrigerator, a double sink, plenty of counter space and pots and pans; it is rented separately and cannot be used as sleeping quarters, and renters bring their own plates, utensils and specialized equipment. A newer lecture hall is available for meetings, training, weddings, retreats and family reunions — it has electricity, is accessible, holds 90 people, and has men's and women's bathrooms and showers nearby. The cabins sit amidst old-growth trees, mostly hemlock and maple, within walking distance of the lake. Tall white pines, hemlocks and other evergreens border the shore; loons can be heard singing across the lake, and a watchful eye can catch the resident eagle or osprey searching the water for their next meal. The Whisker Lake Wilderness is a short drive, about 10 minutes off Highway 70. Numerous lakes and rivers nearby invite exploring, kayaking and canoeing, there are great biking trails within an hour west near Eagle River, Wisconsin, and the local Florence County Waterfall Tour and an Iron Mine Tour about 40 minutes away round out the area. Day trips to the Sylvania Wilderness, Bond Falls, the Porcupine Mountains or Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on Lake Superior are all within a two-hour drive into the Upper Peninsula.
