The Middle Delaware National Scenic & Recreational River Primitive Campsites are 62 sites along the Delaware River as it runs through Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. This part of the river is relatively unspoiled as it travels through the rural landscape. A stay at one of these campsites will give you your fill of nature: sleeping under the stars, birds chirping, tree frogs, the river running by, and hopefully some wildlife along the way. Camping is limited to one night per campsite. After one night all campers must move to another camping zone if they plan to camp along the river additional nights. The river is divided into five zones — the north park boundary to Milford Beach, Milford Beach to Dingmans Boat Launch, Dingmans Boat Launch to Bushkill Boat Launch, Bushkill Boat Launch to Smithfield Beach, and Smithfield Beach to Kittatinny Point. Within your zone you may pick any available site on arrival, which gives boaters the freedom and spontaneity of choosing a site while on the river. We recommend finding the campsite of your choice sooner rather than later in the day; there is no guarantee the site you want will be available when you boat there, so plan alternatives if you pass open campsites and choose to keep going. The ALOSA campsite, within zone 4, requires its own permit and is not available for zone 4 camping. Each campsite offers a campfire ring, but amenities differ when it comes to toilets: some sites have pit toilets, some utilize clivus composting toilets, and a few others have porta johns. All of the primitive campsites are situated under tall hardwood trees, providing shade for the warm summer months of camping. Lifejackets are the law on this river. Children aged 12 and under must wear Coast Guard-approved lifejackets at all times when on the river, fitted appropriately and fully fastened. Any person paddling or boating must have their own Coast Guard-approved lifejacket or PFD onboard and readily accessible in case of emergency, and from November 1 through April 30 all boaters must wear them on boats less than 16 feet in length and on canoes and kayaks, to protect against cold water shock. Know your surroundings, and keep an eye out for landmarks that would let you describe where you are in an emergency. Keep your phone and identification in a waterproof bag for safety.
