Roaring Plains West Wilderness

The Roaring Plains West Wilderness is located approximately 3 miles southwest of the Dolly Sods Wilderness, with Canaan Valley State Park about 5 miles north. Primary access is from the Flatrock Run Trail and Forest Road 70, which is gated but open during autumn hunting season. The vegetation is diverse, consisting of mixed hardwoods, red spruce and brush, with an understory of bogs, grasses and rhododendron. Elevations range from 3,000 feet along the southern perimeter to over 4,700 feet at the top of Mt. Porte Crayon. The 4-mile trail system is open to hikers and equestrians and provides numerous scenic views.
