Windy Point is located near Dillon Reservoir at an elevation of 9,000 feet in the White River National Forest, with views to the reservoir and several mountain ranges. The site consists of a group camp and a group picnic shelter that can accommodate up to 100 people each. Due to the pine beetle infestation and removal of hazard trees, there is little or no shade at Windy Point. Dillon Reservoir, often referred to as Lake Dillon, is the greatest draw to Windy Point and an ideal spot for fishing, boating and sailing. Anglers will find that the reservoir supports a healthy population of rainbow and brown trout, with an occasional cutthroat trout finding its way into the lake from feeder streams. Opportunities for hiking and biking include more than 7 paved miles of the 50-mile Summit County trail system. From the reservoir, the Old Dillon Reservoir Trail is a favorite — this short, easy trail has spectacular views of the Tenmile Range and the Continental Divide. The Old Dillon Reservoir was built in the 1930s to supply water to the original town of Dillon, which is now covered by the new Dillon Reservoir. There are two loops, Lake Loop and Forest Loop. Both can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs within the designated area on hardened gravel surfaces only. There are no electric hook-ups, but potable water is available at a spigot in each loop. Lake Loop has a 2,600-square-foot covered pavilion on a concrete pad, four large grills, three serving tables, five tall gathering tables, a two-basin stainless steel preparation area, a large group fire pit with benches, two toilet facilities and adequate parking; a gravel path parallels the roadway, making the area accessible. Forest Loop has a large gravel gathering area, a group fire pit with benches, tables, two toilets and adequate parking, with a tent area designated at the west end of the parking lot and an overlook at the top of the grassy knoll that can be walked up to for a ceremony. This is not a private facility. Boat launch access is via several marinas along the east shore of Lake Dillon to the shoreline at the Lake Loop, the shoreline is available for public use, and several trails travel through the campground and terminate at the lakeshore — the public may be along the shoreline, walking the trails or walking the road during your event. Always close the gate. Camping is limited to the gravel and hardened areas, motorized, electric and mechanized vehicles must stay on the designated road and parking area, ground disturbance of any kind is prohibited, quiet hours are 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and all food and beverages must be stored in locked vehicles or the sheds provided — bears are not invited to the party. Commercial delivery of RVs and campers is prohibited, as is releasing or throwing any item such as rice, seeds, flowers, animals or birds. Hooks, cables, screws, staples and other fasteners are prohibited in or on the pavilion: decorations must be attached using the cables and hooks provided, curtain, plastic and vinyl walls must be attached to the existing cable system, and no weight-bearing devices such as hammocks or swing chairs may hang from the pavilion or in the trees. All decorations are temporary and must be removed. Use of the shoreline below the small gathering area is prohibited, and no tents, tables or ceremonies are allowed below it. On the grassy knoll, lights and other illumination are prohibited and structures are prohibited, though chairs are acceptable. In the heart of the Rocky Mountains, the 2.3 million acre White River National Forest is a place of serenity and adventure, boasting 8 wilderness areas, 4 defined seasons and 10 peaks surpassing 14,000 feet in elevation. The nearby Eagles Nest Wilderness, designated in 1976, is a playground of craggy cliffs, sheer rock faces, alpine lakes and deep, forested valleys; foot travel across this pristine area is challenging and often strenuous, but rewarded with spectacular scenery. Bighorn sheep navigate rocky ridges and bull elk bugle at dusk. Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, Breckenridge and Copper Mountain ski resorts are all within 10 miles of Dillon Reservoir, and stay open year round.
