Nobody warns you how loud reindeer are before sunrise. Not dramatic loud — a constant, low clicking sound from their leg tendons as they move, audible even before you can see them in the half-dark of an Alaskan morning in late spring. I'd read about it before the trip. Hearing it for the first time, from inside a canvas tent forty feet from the paddock, was something else entirely.
The Feeding Walk
Guests are invited on the morning feeding walk, and it's less a tour than a chore you're temporarily allowed to help with — buckets of feed, a working herd that has somewhere to be, a rancher who's done this every morning for six years and clearly isn't performing it for an audience. That's what made it feel real rather than staged.
The Chugach range does something to the light at that hour that I haven't seen replicated anywhere else I've traveled — a cold blue that holds for almost forty minutes before the sun actually clears the ridgeline, long enough that you stop reaching for your camera and just stand there instead. Even the reindeer seemed to pause for it, or at least that's the story I tell myself.
By the time the sun was properly up, the herd had scattered back across the meadow and the morning had turned into an ordinary ranch day — fences to check, guests to feed breakfast, a hundred small tasks that had nothing to do with the reason any of us had come. I've thought about that first hour more than almost anything else from the trip. It's rare to be handed something that unguarded.
