New experience

Visitor entry to the Bodie Island Lighthouse in North Carolina. The tower is banded in wide black and white horizontal stripes and topped by a black lantern room with an open railed gallery. A low white keeper's house with a shingled roof and brick chimneys stands at its base, and a white picket fence encloses both. The ground around is flat open grass running out to low shrub and marsh, with a wide sky overhead and no higher ground in view. Inside, a cast-iron spiral staircase winds up the tower against whitewashed brick walls, its treads and landings made of perforated metal and its curving handrail carried on the central column.
