New experience

An evening tour at Fort Pulaski National Monument in Georgia. A timber bridge approaches the fort at dusk, its planking lined on both sides with lit oil lanterns that reflect off the boards, the way in framed by grassed earthwork slopes and a dark arched entrance ahead. Inside, the brick casemate arcade is lit warm orange along its length, light spilling from doorways and windows, with small lanterns set in a row across the parade ground, a wheeled cannon and a barrel standing on the grass, and visitors gathered under the arches, some in period clothing. One photograph catches a cannon being fired in the dark, a broad muzzle flash and trailing sparks throwing light across the lawn and silhouetting the crew beside the gun.
