New experience

A tour of Lucky Peak Dam in Idaho, among the Lucky Peak Lake tours and programs. Along the concrete crest, a paved roadway runs between pipe railings past a stepped gate housing with metal cabinets and grated doors and a camera on a tall pole; two staff stand at the railing beside a parked pickup. The reservoir lies alongside, its shoreline drawn back to bare ground, with dry rolling hills and a light dusting of snow behind. A second view looks down on the site at sunset: the long dark face of the earthen embankment, lettered KEEP YOUR FORESTS GREEN across it, with a road cut along the ridge above and hills layered into the distance. Below the dam sit a green park of mown lawn and shade trees, looped roads and parking, a pond with a sandy edge and a fountain, small shelters, and a lit powerhouse building on the river.
