New experience

Beach parking at Sandy Hook, part of Gateway National Recreation Area in Highlands, New Jersey, managed by the National Park Service. Traffic enters past a small entrance station with brown park signage and a posted board, cones and painted lane markings, a uniformed staff member at the window as cars pass through. Beyond it the lots sit just behind the dune line: rows of cars on open asphalt, a fenced sandy bank of low shrubs alongside, and a paved shared path with a yellow center stripe and a painted pedestrian crossing running between the parking and the shore. A white masonry lighthouse with a red lantern room and gallery railing stands among the trees on the hook.
