New experience

A virtual reality program at the Pearl Harbor visitor center in Hawaii, part of the Pearl Harbor Narrated Multimedia Tours & Virtual Reality Center. Its computer-generated scenes are set in the harbor at water level and from the decks of moored ships: grey warships alongside quays, one rolled onto its side, fire and black smoke standing on the water, and on-screen captions naming vessels including USS Utah and USS Raleigh. Other frames look out from a planked ship's deck across flat water to the low hills beyond, with aircraft overhead, and away from the harbor at a shoreside yard where a canvas-backed truck stands among open sheds and scattered trees. Viewing is from a covered outdoor deck at the visitor center — a railed platform under the building's wide canopy, lined with rows of stands each holding a headset, with lawn, palms and the harbor beyond the rail.
