New experience

Photographs from this canyoneering program in Zion National Park show narrow sandstone slots cut deep into the rock, their walls fluted and cross-bedded in bands of grey, tan and red. In places the passage is barely wider than a person's shoulders; elsewhere it opens onto a floor of pale, water-worn cobbles. Several images show roped work: a helmeted party rappelling past overhangs and through a high arched opening in the rock, downclimbing polished chutes, and hanging above dark standing pools whose surfaces carry rafts of pale foam. Light reaches the bottom only where the slot widens, so the walls run from sunlit gold near the rim to deep shadow at the floor. Zion National Park is managed by the National Park Service.
