Zion National Park Overnight Wilderness Permits
Hosted by National Park Service
New experience
Overnight wilderness travel in Zion National Park, managed by the National Park Service. The photographs cover the high country away from the canyon floor. Red dirt trails climb through open stands of ponderosa pine and past juniper and low brush, backpackers walking them; elsewhere the ground turns to bare, cross-bedded sandstone and the route runs along the edge of a deep, white-walled canyon. Wide views take in domes and mesas of pale slickrock, streaked cliff faces, dark timber in the drainages and red rock beyond, with weathered dead snags standing on the exposed rims. One frame shows a camp: a small dome tent pitched on flat sandstone and sand, red and cream cliffs catching pink light above it and a band of green trees between.
